Most Common Garage Door Opener Problems And Troubleshooting Tips

Due of the quantity of cycles your garage door go through with daily use, garage door repairs and annual maintenance checks are pretty common. The sooner the issue is identified, the less damage and cost you’ll have in the future.

These are 5 common garage door problems and some tips on repairing them -


1. Garage door start to open, then closes immediately When this happens, it’s likely that the springs found at the top of the door need replacing, but sometimes it is just a sensor malfunction or even something in the way of the sensor that will keep it from closing the door as a precaution.

2. Garage door opener won’t work Garage door opener issues are very common, mostly because it is working constantly on lifting and closing your garage door. This is something that you may be able to easily fix. Chain drive garage door openers for example, can use some lubricant to reduce friction. Apply a generous amount of lubricant (one that is silicone based) or use a garage door spray lube to the full length of the chain and be sure to wipe off the excess.

2. Annoying, grinding noise Generally, if your garage door opener is noisy, it usually means it needs some lubrication.


3. Garage door opener is unresponsive This could mean there’s an issue with the photo-eyes. If there are no lights on one of the sensors, check if the garage opener is properly plugged in. Test the electrical outlet with a different device to check if it’s working.

4. Garage door remote is broken Now this is a #1 common issue! When your garage door remote doesn't work, the first thing to do will be to do what you would do with any remote - check if it’s a battery related issue. Most chances are all you need to do is to replace your remote batteries. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to use your opener's manual to reprogram the remote.
